Winter in The Great White North

Towed Haul went into hibernation back at the end of October and since then we've lived through winter, through the snow and the ice and the bone numbing temperatures, all due to something known as the "Polar Vortex". I'm not a complete dullard when it comes to meteorology and I understand about the relative positions of the Jet Stream each winter but I don't have a clue as to why it was called the Polar Vortex for this year; another invention of bored copywriters at the newspapers I suspect.

Anyway, Towed Haul will be covered in a layer of snow up in her winter quarters in London and all we've been able to do is to think back to lovely times enjoyed and look forward to times to be enjoyed. Oh, and I've wasted a ton of time reading and commenting on the AirForums.

For those that don't know, AirForums is a place on the Internet where Airstream owners can swap ideas and knowledge about any aspect of their Airstreams. Chatter can range from the best chili recipe to how to store a gun when on the road. I tend to get involved in the towing and tow vehicles debates, what with the Toadmobile being my specialist subject. The trouble is that I have thrown my toys out of the pram on a couple of occasions over the winter, especially when beating my head against a brick wall has done me no good, and I've also been a bit troubled about some of the moderating decisions lately.

Beating my head against a brick wall is something that I've grown accustomed to on AirForums; certain ideas amongst some of my fellow Airstreamers cannot be influenced whatsoever, regardless of the weight of evidence that can (and often is) presented. I've kind of backed off from there now and when people tell me that I can't tow with the vehicle that I've been towing with for three years, I tend to just ignore them. It's a shame that I feel obliged to stay quiet these days because it seems those that shout loudest are the ones to get heard, but I do have my sanity to consider. The trouble is that I do care about the contributors on AirForums and no matter how misguided I think they are, I can't just tell them to "wake up and smell the coffee"; being English I can't bear the thought of anyone thinking I'm not delightful at all times.

As to the moderating, well in my view the moderators have killed off too many valid debates recently, all in the name of avoiding any conflict. Yes, I know that it's a private site and subject entirely to whim of the duly appointed moderators, but sometimes it looks as if they're a bit nervous of good, healthy debate. I'm firmly of the view that people should feel free to voice their opinions (and have them challenged) so to find a quite harmless discussion being brought to a pre-mature end can be frustrating. You might wonder why I'm even writing about this here but, as the AirForums site rules say, moderators' decisions can't even be discussed, let alone challenged, so I have to use this forum to let some steam off.

On the positive side, we AirForums small tow vehicle pro-ponents are getting some success in having others see our point of view, which is most encouraging.

So, to the forthcoming season. Towed Haul gets collected at the start of April and we already have our long May weekend camping dates sorted. We have no plans for long trips this year, partly because Mrs Toad is studying and partly because the tadpoles are getting a bit less enamoured at the thought of spending quality time with us. That said, the local trips are always good so I'm looking forward to some time spent in our Ontario Provincial Parks this year.

Until then, though, all I can do is look out at the piles of snow outside and fret about the floods that are sure to follow when the stuff thaws out. In the meantime, I shall add some nice wintry photographs to this entry of our journal, so that we can look back and laugh (ha ha ha) in the summer!

(The photos were taken this January along the Canadian side of the St Clair River. For my American friends, that's Michigan across on the other bank)

  1. Hi Steve,

Just so you know, I always read and appreciate your posts on AirForums. We have been clients of Can-Am for several years and have been to one of Andy's workshop. We will be returning to London this Spring to have our new Touareg and new 25 FB International set up. So count me as one of "those" people. I, too, raise an eyebrow at the lack of logic sometimes. My husband and I have worked hard to understand all the towing parameters, and although far from experts, can figure out fact from fiction from marketing. So just know that there are some people that appreciate your remarks.

    1. Thanks Caryl. Good luck with the Touareg and the twenty-five footer; it sounds like a fantastic combination. I like that you raise an eyebrow, by the way, that's just the sort I do when I get REALLY upset :)

  2. Got to agree with you Steve - the moderation is trigger happy. I'd much rather have spirited discussion in a freewheeling thread than the current policy, cutting it all off in the name of niceness.

    1. Trigger happy is right, and quite appropriate in the light of the "my gun is bigger than your gun" threads. There's a member, not a mod, who is getting right on my tits at the moment (being fluent in Britspeak you'll have heard that expression before), so I'm taking a break for a while.

  3. I agree with you about the AirForums. As a younger Airstream owner, I always picture a perpetually cranky old man typing away at the computer while talking to himself. A good exchange of opinions requires the ability to consider other points of views. All threads on tow vehicles and Goodyear Marathon tires just exhaust me. I am thinking about checking out Can-Am at some point. I am sure I could improve my towing setup with a bit of assistance. Have fun in Ontario when it warms up. Where are in the same boat here in Ohio. I would love to explore that province with my Airstream. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    1. I realised that I'd missed your question about Ontario, so here goes. It's a vast province with Algonquin park and Ottawa probably the number one destinations for visitors. There's also the Thousand Islands area on the St Lawrence River in the east of the Province, Toronto for the city life and Niagara for sightseeing and wine tasting. Closer to home for you is Windsor, if you like Casinos, and the north coast of Lake Erie for the quieter life. One trip that a lot of US visitors make is around the Great Lakes; enter Canada at Port Huron MI and skirt all around the edge of lake Huron up to Tobermory. From there you get a ferry to Manatoulin island then carry on around to Sault Ste Marie, at the bottom of Lake Superior. From there you can dive south back into Michigan again or go west to the Upper Peninsular, or if you're feeling adventurous, strike north along the top of Lake Superior to Thunder Bay, almost Ontario's most westerly point. By heading south towards Duluth you can come back on the western side of lake Michigan and through Chicago. We will undertake the the Thunder Bay trip at some point although I might take in Georgian Bay rather go up to Tobermory and use the Ferry. Tobermory is a lovely place by my towing gear is so low to the ground I'm not sure how it would do on the ferry (probably OK but it's a nice run around Georgian Bay anyway). We use the Ontario Provincial Parks for campgrounds as they suit us better than commercial campgrounds; the parks don't have full hookups, just electricity, but their site facilities are excellent and fully included in the price. Just Google Ontario Parks. Maybe we'll see you out on the road one day?

  4. Thanks for your comment Doug. I think some of my fellow AirForums contributors could be classed as "cranky old guys" and very "set in their ways". It doesn't make for constructive exchanges and like you, I get tired of the same old stuff being re-circulated. Still, I do get a bit of a kick when I drop something antagonistic into the conversation; I guess I can be quite contrary when the mood takes me.

    1. I am the same way. However, I am not trying to start an age war. I would never mention such a thing on Airforums. The Airstream community is great as a whole.

  5. Er... I don't know anything about Airstream (except what I've picked up reading your blogs) or towing parameters, but I like the pictures ha ha.

in one picture you show the front of a nasty TV and the front looks alike a nascar so low to the ground. Do you have a problem with parking lots curbs.. I have a elantra and bumped the curb a couple time till i figured it out the front was LOW.. I understand you frustration on air about what makes a good TV.. not everything has to be a f-250 to do a good job..

Wish i could get my wife to get on board but she is dead set against a MINI VAN.. too bad your is a nice looking rig for sure.

    cheers.

  7. Hi Carl,

    Thanks for your comment.

The picture of the Sienna in the snow is a bit misleading I think; I reckon that the light is playing tricks with the camera there. The front isn't so low and it certainly doesn't cause problems very often. I've only grounded it occasionally and only then on a very high curb.

I know that "truck people" really struggle with the low stance of a minivan, but if they knew anything at all about towing stability they'd know that low is good.

I've encountered a fair bit of minivan hate over the last three years, towing related and not towing related, which is a shame as they're good, all-round vehicles. These advertising people have a lot to answer for! Still, I don't care because I know I have a good towing solution.

    All the best,
    Steve
